Vanuatu land divers (Naghol)

by rod ~ March 8th, 2010

This is crazy. The people on the island of Pentecost Island, Vanuatu have a 1500 year old tradition called Naghol which is basically the ancient bungee jumping.
The tower from which they jump from is a giant 25 meter (75 feet) wooden construction joined together by vines. The ritual is a annual tradition and is celebrated around the same time as the yam harvest. The goal of the Naghol divers is to bless the soil for the coming year by skimming the earth with the top of his head. It is said that the ritual guarantees fertile soil for the farmers. These days the festival is also a way for the young boys to demonstrate their courage by jumping of the tower. photography by Michael Craig
